When the work week winds down, thereโs no better way to recharge than lacing up your boots and hitting the trail. Whether you’re chasing summit views, forest serenity, or a peaceful escape close to home, Thurston County has some of the best day hikes in the Pacific Northwest. These local trails are perfect for a quick reset and a fresh perspectiveโno overnight gear needed.
As someone who lives and works in the heart of the South Sound, Iโm always looking for ways to soak in the natural beauty that makes our region special. These are a few of my favorite spots when I need a weekend adventure that delivers big views and fresh air without straying too far from Olympia or Lacey.

1. Mima Falls Trail โ Capitol State Forest
Distance: 6.5 miles round trip
Level: Moderate
Why Go: This forested trail leads to a waterfall surrounded by mossy trees and lush ferns. Itโs a peaceful hike with just enough elevation to get your heart rate up. Bonus: it’s dog-friendly and well-marked.
2. Mount Rose Trail โ Olympic National Forest (Just outside the county)
Distance: 6 miles round trip
Level: Hard
Why Go: This one is for the hikers who love a challenge. A steep, steady climb rewards you with panoramic views of Lake Cushman and surrounding peaks. Itโs technically in Mason County, but worth the short drive from Olympia if you’re craving elevation and epic scenery.
3. Watershed Park Loop โ Olympia
Distance: 1.5 miles loop
Level: Easy
Why Go: Tucked away in the middle of Olympia, this hidden gem feels like a secret forest escape. Itโs perfect for a quick nature break or a peaceful stroll with the kids or pups.
4. McLane Creek Nature Trail โ Capitol State Forest
Distance: 1.4 miles loop
Level: Easy
Why Go: Great for families and wildlife lovers, this flat loop takes you past beaver ponds, boardwalks, and shaded forest. Keep your eyes peeled for ducks, frogs, and bald eagles.
5. Millersylvania State Park Trails โ South of Tumwater
Distance: Varies
Level: Easy to Moderate
Why Go: This state park offers miles of interconnected trails through old-growth forest and around Deep Lake. Pack a lunch and stay for a swimโitโs a classic summer go-to.
๐ฒ Pro Tip: Always Pack the Essentials
Even on a short hike, bring water, snacks, sunscreen, and layers. Cell service can be spotty in some areas, so download your trail map in advance.
