Best Indoor Activities in Olympia, Lacey, Tumwater, and Nearby

Chilly, rainy days are part of life in the Pacific Northwest. Personally, I love starting mine with a hot mocha and an extra shot from Cutters Point. Sitting in the hot tub on a rainy evening isn’t bad either. But if you’re looking for more to do than sip and soak, here are some of my favorite places in Thurston County to stay dry, stay active, and still enjoy the day.

Whether you’re looking to entertain the kids, try something new, or unwind in a cozy spot, these indoor activities around Olympia, Lacey, and Tumwater are local-approved and ready for your next rainy day.

1. Visit a Cozy Coffee Shop in Olympia or Lacey

When it’s drizzling outside, nothing beats a warm cup of coffee and a seat by the window. Whether you’re looking for strong espresso, cozy vibes, or a spot to catch up with friends, these local coffee shops are worth a visit.

Olympia Coffee Roasting – Known for ethically sourced beans and smooth espresso. The downtown Olympia location is sleek, welcoming, and consistently named one of the best coffee spots in the South Sound.
Burial Grounds Coffee Collective – Dark, quirky, and 100 percent Olympia. Great for creatives, students, and anyone who enjoys a little goth with their latte.
Hart’s Mesa – A bright, cheerful café tucked into West Olympia. Known for its cinnamon rolls, community feel, and seasonal drinks.
Dancing Goats Espresso Bar – Right next to the Batdorf & Bronson roastery. You can smell the coffee roasting as you sip. It’s a must for serious coffee lovers.
Cutters Point Coffee – This one’s my personal go-to. When it’s chilly and gray, I grab a hot mocha with an extra shot and settle in. Their Lacey and Tumwater locations are local staples.

2. See a Movie or Catch a Live Show

Rainy weather pairs perfectly with a warm bucket of popcorn or live entertainment. Whether you’re watching a blockbuster or a local performance, there’s always something playing.

Yelm Cinemas – A local favorite for good reason. Affordable tickets, friendly service, and a clean, cozy space make this a top pick. Plus, the attached Uptown Lounge offers a full-service restaurant and bar with flavorful cocktails and comfort food. Come hungry, leave happy.
Century Olympia – Located inside Capital Mall, this modern theater features reclining seats, surround sound, and easy access to shops and restaurants. It’s a great choice for a full afternoon out.
Capitol Theater – A downtown Olympia landmark and home to the Olympia Film Society. Expect indie films, documentaries, throwback classics, and community screenings in a one-of-a-kind vintage setting. If you’re looking for character and charm, this is it.
Washington Center for the Performing Arts – From musicals and comedy to concerts and ballet, this performing arts hub brings culture and live entertainment to the heart of Olympia.

3. Try an Indoor Art or Craft Activity

If rainy days bring out your creative side, you’re in the right place. From hands-on pottery to group painting, these studios make it easy to try something new indoors.

Let’s Paint! Lacey – Drop-in painting events, DIY canvas kits, and friendly instructors make this a top choice for a casual, creative escape. Great for all ages.
Arbutus Folk School – Tucked in downtown Olympia, this community arts space offers classes in everything from ceramics and wood carving to blacksmithing and folk crafts.
Michaels and Joann Fabrics (Lacey, Olympia) – Keep an eye on weekend craft classes and in-store workshops for kids and adults alike. Easy, affordable fun when you’re looking to create and relax.

Cirque Climbing (Lacey) – Indoor rock climbing for all levels. Whether you’re a first-timer or a seasoned climber, Cirque is clean, welcoming, and fun.
The Valley Athletic Club (Tumwater) – Full-service fitness center with indoor pools, tennis courts, group classes, and everything you need to break a sweat indoors.
South Sound YMCA (Olympia & Briggs) – Group workouts, family swim, youth programs, and a community-first vibe. Membership is flexible and they often have day pass options.
Planet Fitness (Lacey, Tumwater) – Budget-friendly and no frills. Great if you just want to hop on a treadmill and go.

5. Find Family-Friendly Indoor Activities in Olympia

When you’re cooped up with kids and looking for something more than screen time, these family spots are packed with hands-on fun.

Hands On Children’s Museum (Olympia) – This place is a local legend. With interactive exhibits, art studios, and indoor climbing zones, it’s easy to spend hours here.
WET Science Center (Olympia) – Free, educational, and perfect for rainy days. The hands-on exhibits are all about water, the environment, and sustainability.
DuPont Parks & Rec Indoor Events – From tot time to seasonal crafts and indoor movie nights, the city of DuPont offers great community options for families with little ones.
Lacey Timberland Library – Storytime, crafts, puzzles, and play zones make this library more than just books. Bonus: it’s warm, free, and quiet when you need a break.
BoomShaka Olympia – High-energy indoor trampoline park with foam pits, ninja courses, and climbing walls. Fun for kids, teens, and even grown-ups who aren’t afraid to bounce.
DEFY Olympia – Wall-to-wall trampolines, stunt zones, and obstacle courses. A favorite for birthday parties and rainy-day escapes.
Laser Fun Zone Lacey – Indoor laser tag, arcade games, and a fun hangout vibe. A good choice for group fun or a weekend activity with older kids.

Orca Books Cooperative (Olympia) – Community-run bookstore with thoughtful shelves and friendly staff. A great place to find your next favorite.
Browsers Bookshop (Downtown Olympia) – A cozy, curated shop full of fiction, nonfiction, and literary charm. Great staff picks and author events too.
Gabi’s Olympic Cards & Comics (Lacey) – Huge selection of games, cards, comics, and collectibles. Friendly staff and a fun place to browse for all ages.
Gamezenter Lacey – A hidden gem for tabletop gaming. They host events and game nights, so check their calendar.

7. Treat Yourself to a Spa or Wellness Day

If your rainy day goals involve relaxation and self-care, Thurston County has you covered.

Radiance Herbs & Massage (Olympia) – Boutique spa and herbal apothecary with a strong local following. Step inside and instantly feel the stress melt away.

8. Sip and Stay Dry at Local Wineries and Breweries

Rainy weather is the perfect excuse to grab a glass of something good. These local tasting rooms are great for a laid-back afternoon indoors.

Stottle Winery (Lacey) – Small, approachable, and award-winning. Their tasting room is a favorite for wine lovers in the area.
Matchless Brewing (Tumwater) – Creative brews and a chill atmosphere. You’ll often find food trucks and a welcoming crowd.
Well 80 Brewhouse (Olympia) – Historic downtown brewpub built over one of Olympia’s artesian wells. Great food, local beer, and a fun, casual vibe.
Top Rung Brewing (Lacey) – Founded by local firefighters. Known for clean, crisp beers and a family-friendly taproom.
