    Chilly, rainy days are part of life in the Pacific Northwest. Personally, I love starting mine with a hot mocha and an extra shot from Cutters Point. Sitting in the hot tub on a rainy evening isn’t bad either. But if you’re looking for more to do than sip and soak, here are some of my favorite places in Thurston County to stay dry, stay active, and still enjoy the day.

    Whether you’re looking to entertain the kids, try something new, or unwind in a cozy spot, these indoor activities around Olympia, Lacey, and Tumwater are local-approved and ready for your next rainy day.

    1. Visit a Cozy Coffee Shop in Olympia or Lacey

    When it’s drizzling outside, nothing beats a warm cup of coffee and a seat by the window. Whether you’re looking for strong espresso, cozy vibes, or a spot to catch up with friends, these local coffee shops are worth a visit.

    • Olympia Coffee Roasting – Known for ethically sourced beans and smooth espresso. The downtown Olympia location is sleek, welcoming, and consistently named one of the best coffee spots in the South Sound.
    • Burial Grounds Coffee Collective – Dark, quirky, and 100 percent Olympia. Great for creatives, students, and anyone who enjoys a little goth with their latte.
    • Hart’s Mesa – A bright, cheerful café tucked into West Olympia. Known for its cinnamon rolls, community feel, and seasonal drinks.
    • Dancing Goats Espresso Bar – Right next to the Batdorf & Bronson roastery. You can smell the coffee roasting as you sip. It’s a must for serious coffee lovers.
    • Cutters Point Coffee – This one’s my personal go-to. When it’s chilly and gray, I grab a hot mocha with an extra shot and settle in. Their Lacey and Tumwater locations are local staples.

    Rainy weather pairs perfectly with a warm bucket of popcorn or live entertainment. Whether you’re watching a blockbuster or a local performance, there’s always something playing.

    • Yelm Cinemas – A local favorite for good reason. Affordable tickets, friendly service, and a clean, cozy space make this a top pick. Plus, the attached Uptown Lounge offers a full-service restaurant and bar with flavorful cocktails and comfort food. Come hungry, leave happy.
    • Century Olympia – Located inside Capital Mall, this modern theater features reclining seats, surround sound, and easy access to shops and restaurants. It’s a great choice for a full afternoon out.
